The digital revolution has changed the professional recording needs of musicians across the nation. Today, a lot of bands are recording themselves; moving out of the big, expensive studios and finding other more cost-effective places to make recordings. In some cases, this is the basement or a spare bedroom. In other cases, it's meant that it's some sort of hybrid combination of drums at the big studio and guitar overdubs at home. At best, these recordings serve as a form of pre-production to the bigger album project recorded entirely at the big studio. This freedom has enabled unprecedented opportunities for bands of all levels to really get wrapped up in the songwriting process and more and more artists are using the home studio as a sketch-pad for new ideas.
But even this new freedom is not without its limitations. While great recordings can be made this way, there is no substitute for having a specialist handling the technical parts so that you can concentrate on doing what you do best- Making Music. Having an engineer or producer with a keen ear, advanced musical training and the patience to master the technical side of the process is paramount to making progress when you sit down to work, and ensures that you're able to render great results for the money spent.
