Some thoughts on the audio production of Seed:
Gabe: “When Ben approached me about doing the sound design and a score for Seed, he had only gotten though some preliminary development. It was a great time for us to start working together as there were a lot of key elements to the story that he knew he wanted to get across through the sound design. Everything had to have a very dark and fearful tinge to it and since the piece was to be a stop-frame animation, it was necessary for there to be something constant going in the background that would help to sell the fluidity of the visual element.
It took Ben two years of filming one frame at a time in his basement before he achieved a rough cut for me to work from, but all the while, we still held regular meetings and I was recording various experimental sound effects and we were working at the same time.
In the end, it took about six months to complete the sound design and score. Almost every sound was recorded from scratch or manipulated in some outrageous way until we had exactly what we wanted. The music came from a lot of non-traditional instruments and there’s even a vocal performance where we put the microphone’s diaphragm against the singer’s Adam’s apple to get the vibrational timbre of vocal chords though the neck. Very rough on the vocalist, but worth it.”
